The Department of Foreign Languages at National Chiayi University is seeking suitable contract English teachers to join its faculty. The employment starts on August 1, 2026. Appointment will be on a fixed term contract basis. The employed instructor will teach 12 hours per week if s/he is hired as an assistant professor.

Qualifications

1. The candidates need to have a PhD degree and specialize in British and American Literature.

• Native speakers of English will be given priority consideration. Candidates who maintain working experiences relevant to teaching English language in tertiary institutions are likewise favored.

2. Applicants without a foreign Ph.D. degree or without at least one year of overseas postdoctoral research experience must provide a foreign language proficiency certificate or other supporting documentation sufficient to demonstrate foreign language ability. The language proficiency standards and acceptable forms of proof are listed in the attached table.

Native English speakers or those who possess proficiency in a foreign language other than English will receive priority consideration.

3. English autobiography
4. Photocopies of Master’s and Doctoral diplomas and transcripts (one copy each)

(For degrees obtained abroad, all diplomas, transcripts, and employment certificates must be certified by an ROC embassy, representative office, or authorized institution. Applicants must also provide their entry/exit records issued by the National Immigration Agency.)

5. Abstract of Master’s thesis and a hardcopy of doctoral dissertation
6. A comprehensive list of publications and research paper
7. Three major works, doctoral dissertation included, from the past five years (offprints or photocopies are acceptable)
8. Course descriptions of subjects the candidate is inclined to teach
9. Two sealed and signed recommendation letters with contact details of the referees (The letters can either be enclosed with the application documents or emailed from the referees to the department.)
10. Any other recognized certificates or documents favorable for potential employment (For example, research grants or projects funded by national or international agencies, teaching certificate, or other professional certificates)
11. Affidavit regarding whether the prospective employee (or current position holder) has household registration in Mainland China or possesses a Mainland Chinese passport, identity card, residence permit, or residence certificate. (To be completed only by individuals who hold a Taiwan household registration.)

Notes

2. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview whereas those who fail to provide complete application materials (listed above) will not be reviewed.
3. Accepted candidates are expected to teach basic English skills courses, such as composition, oral expression and reading.
4. Contract-based faculty members are required to assist with departmental or university affairs, such as serving as student advisors, supporting recruitment activities, coaching students for intercollegiate speech competitions, and scheduling at least one hour per week for extracurricular English conversation sessions with students.

English proficiency certificates:Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency at CEFR Level C2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Other Acceptable Evidence of Foreign Language Proficiency

1. Having received National Science and Technology Council funding for postdoctoral research abroad for more than one year.

2. Having conducted research abroad for more than one year.

3. Having served as a visiting scholar abroad for more than one year.

4. Providing documented evidence of teaching courses conducted in a foreign language.

5. Conducting a full English oral presentation or teaching demonstration during the departmental review interview.

6. The entire interview should be audio and video recorded and archived for reference.
